| Tentative Itinerary |
|
Day 1 - Arrive in Morelia, UNESCO World Heritage Site and capital of the state of Michoacán. After settling into our hotel, Casa Suites Morelia, we meet for drinks at a sidewalk café overlooking the lovely Plaza de Armas (main square) followed by a delicious dinner at one of Morelia's fine restaurants.

Day 2 - All day guided tour of historical and cultural sites in Morelia’s beautiful historic downtown. After a delicious mid-day meal and short siesta, the tour continues until early evening. Then we stop for drinks while viewing the fireworks and illumination of Morelia’s magnificent cathedral.

Day 3 - We take a morning stroll through Morelia’s largest market, where one can see everything for sale, from flowers and fish, to medicinal herbs and cow heads. It’s all there! We will grab some tacos and rest our feet, and then tour one of Morelia’s best attractions, the Casa de las Artesanias (folk art center). For the evening meal we will taste more of Michoacan’s regional dishes at a popular local dinner spot.

Day 4 - After breakfast we check out of our hotel and head for Patzcuaro, stopping first in the pottery village of Capula. There we will visit artisan workshops and be able to purchase beautiful pottery and clay Catrinas for which this village is known. After several hours we will move on to Patzcuaro and enjoy a sumptuous comida. After a sumptuous comida, we settle into our rooms at the Meson de San Antonio, take a siesta, and then explore this most charming town, including a visit to La Casa de las Once Patios where many of the region’s artisans can be seen working and selling their crafts. We enjoy drinks and light snacks in the evening at a favorite café on the Plaza Grande.

Day 5 - After enjoying a typical breakfast of corundas (Michoacan tamales) and hot atole we visit Patzcuaro’s famous Basilica. We then take a beautiful drive to Tzintzuntzan, where we visit the yacatas, the ruins of the ancient Tarascan civilization, and the present day village’s lovely church and atrium featuring 500 year old olive trees. We visit the workshops of embroiderer, Teofile Servin, well-known Tzintzuntzan potter, Manuel Morales, and shop at the market stalls outside the church. We drive around Lake Patzcuaro and stop for our mid-day meal at a typical fish restaurant (Opongio) overlooking the lake.(meal included) We continue our scenic drive around the lake passing small villages and return to Patzcuaro to relax or shop.

| Day 6 - After a hearty breakfast we’ll take a short drive through the beautiful countryside to visit artisan workshops in the world-renown copper producing village of Santa Clara del Cobre. We visit the Museo de Cobre (copper museum) first and see the amazing process of hand hammered copper at a small copper workshop. We visit the historic chapel and charming village square at Tupataro, before arriving at the wood working and weaving town of Cuanajo. We visit our friend and master weaver, Natividad Casimiro Ramiro and her family. We’ll eat a delicious comida and enjoy some more of Patzcuaro’s sights. |

Day 7 - A two day excursion to various indigenous villages of the remote Meseta Purepecha visiting artisans who create various styles of clay art --Ocumicho, San Jose de Gracia, Patamban, Cocucho are all possiblities.
Day 8 - After breakfast at our hotel, we head back to Morelia, passing through the bustling town of Quiroga (stop for carnitas), and visit the historic village of Santa Fe de la Laguna and the workshop Herlinda Morales, an artisan known for her black clay candelabras. We return to the hotel, Casa Morelia, for a siesta and/or last minute shopping, and we conclude the tour with a special farewell dinner at one of Morelia’s most elegant restaurants.
